Affordable Design for Consultants

Some people will want to have my head on a platter for today’s post.

I’m talking about old school designers and creatives. People that make their income by providing design services to businesses.

Why will they be so unhappy with me? Because today I’m going to share with you how to get professional design on the cheap.

You see, the design industry is undergoing a big change…and many designers feel threatened by it.

Over the last few years several design services have popped up. These services allow you to get professional design at affordable prices.

If you’re looking for a new logo, business card, brochure, book cover, or website design – these services are a great alternative to the standard 1-on-1 work you’d get from a designer.

One of the leading services in this area is 99designs.com

Here’s how it works:

  • You go to their site, enter the details of your design project and set your budget.
  • Designers (plural! and sometimes up to 60 or more) will submit design concepts, also known as mock-ups for whatever you’ve requested.
  • You can eliminate the ones you don’t like. Provide more feedback for the ones that you do like.
  • And the kicker!? You only pay one designer for their design that you’ve selected.

Points to keep in mind…

The higher your budget the more designers you’ll have competing to win your project. That means more design concepts you’ll receive to review.
And you’ll also get better quality designers in the mix.

While this is a great service, it doesn’t provide the one-on-one time and attention you’d receive by working with a designer (and that’s why the traditional model won’t disappear for a long time).

The more detail you provide in your project brief, the better results you’ll get from the designers.

99designs.com provides designs. When the project the designer will provide you with all the design files you need. The service won’t print your materials and if you’ve got a website design you won’t receive any actual programming of the site through this service.

Easy on the pocket book

While you might be a professional designer or design firm $2000-$5000 to design you a great looking logo and identity (much more if you work with a well established large firm), with a service like 99designs you can get a great looking logo and identity going for $300 and up.

The next time you have a project that requires some design, be sure to check out 99designs.com.

I have used 99designs before and it’s worked really great for my business. I like getting lots of designs from designers to choose from.

    • Robert – thanks for comment. Happy to hear that 99 designs has worked for you as well.

  • Amy

For a start up company on a budget – this is truly an exceptional way to get your logo or marketing materials started. I used a similiar site Logo Guru. It had the same concept. We all have to start somewhere and this worked well for me.

    • Amy – welcome to the blog! Thanks for your comment. It is a great service and while it’s best suited to smaller companies I know some large ones are using it as well to get ‘more creative’ and crowd source the visual side of their projects.
