So you want to break into the field and are looking for consulting business ideas to launch your new career. Getting started can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be.
First let’s clear up one big misconception. Good consulting ideas come from a wide-range of specialists and areas of expertise. When you say “consultant” most people instantly have the image of a business consultant, a marketing consultant, someone in pr consulting or even management consulting. But things have changed…
Nowadays you can be a consultant in almost any industry imaginable. That’s why we now have wedding consultants, SEO consultants, social media consultants, cosmetic consultants, food consultants and mining consultants …. boy-oh-boy the list goes on and on.
What do you specialize in?
Begin by figuring out what you know well, I mean really well. If you have more than 10 books on a given subject – and you’ve read them cover to cover, chances are you’re passionate on that subject and know much about it.
If you’ve worked in a manufacturing plant for many years and understand all the aspects of what makes for an efficient manufacturing line – you might have what it takes to become a manufacturing line and process consultant – where by you help manufacturers make their lines more efficient and save them money.
Do you have what it takes?
Just because you love your hobby or know something about pickle fermentation doesn’t mean you can become a consultant and make your living at it.
Here’s the big question: Can you add tangible, measurable and actionable value to a company with your skill set and level of expertise? And can you do it better than anyone already in that company? And lastly, will the company receive a clear benefit that will impact their business? If you can, then you’ve found a great consulting opportunity.
There are other articles on this site that explain how to start your consulting business and market it, so check those for more information. What I can tell you is that if you’re considering becoming a consultant and are looking for consulting ideas to jump start your new career be sure of this … you must be passionate about what you do and you need to be prepared to work harder at it than your competitors.
Passion gets you through the ups and downs – not the money
Without a doubt every one of us encounters a rollercoaster of highs and lows and emotions that twist us in all directions. When the going gets tough, and it always does at one point or another – what will get you through is passion. You need to enjoy the work you’re doing or else there’s really no point.
Don’t go into marketing consulting just because you believe that’s where the money is. If your heart is in building speakers you’re probably better off becoming an audio consultant.
You see, the money comes. If you’re heart is in it, you do a good job, and you work harder than most other consultants in your field – the money will come.
What you don’t need to be
You now know what it takes to make it in this field. You don’t need to be a genius to be a consultant. In fact, there are many consultants that have little formal education yet are extremely successful. So what’s stopping you?
