Marketing Mondays: Hyper-Targeted Local Online Advertising

By Michael Zipursky

The sheer amount of options most business owners and consultants have when it comes to choosing a marketing weapon can be mind boggling.

One area that is showing great promise and that is still underused is hyper targeted and local advertising.

Here are a few ideas for you:

Google PlacesGoogle Maps & Google Places – Does your business have a profile on these? If you’re an SEO Consultant in Michigan, when someone in Michigan searches for a “SEO Consultant” there’s a good chance that your listing on the small Google map that appears will be displayed.

That puts your name and website at the top of the search results – and you don’t have to pay for it.

The sheer amount of options most business owners and consultants have when it comes to choosing a marketing weapon can be mind boggling.

Regardless of what business you’re in, make sure you have a profile setup with these services if you want to be found.

Local PPC AdsLocal PPC – One of the biggest mistakes newbie PPC (pay-per-click) marketers make is to create a general campaign that displays your ads everywhere in the world or in many countries. It’s always better to break your campaigns into separate ones that target different states, provinces or even cities. But I digress…

The opportunity here is to have an ad for your services appearing only to prospective customers in your city. Doing this means you’re ensuring that your message is only seen by the people likely to buy from you, you’ll pay less per click, see higher CTRs, and ultimately be able to make more money from your advertising and keep your ads online longer – exposing your offering to more people.

Facebook AdvertisingOther Hyper-targeting options – Two other great options are LinkedIn and Facebook. On these social networking sites you can create an ad and then select who you want to see it. You can choose the exact location, gender, age, title, interest, company and many other criteria.

Say for example that you want your ad only to be seen by sales managers in Denver you can easily select from a few criteria and only have your ad appear in front of them.

LinkedIn Advertising

The great thing about PPC is that you only pay when someone clicks and you can manage your budget on a daily basis – so as long as you’re checking in and optimizing it you’ll always be on top of the costs.

Have you used any other hyper-targeted or local advertising? Do share. Questions on this topic? Ask away below…

Until next time, stay targeted.
